Book Excerpt The X-Cure

Book Excerpt

The group performed a kind of rite of passage where Angie would read a new person in their lives. Alex avoided this as long as possible but one night, after relentless chiding, he gave in. They all sat around the dining room table after a makeshift dinner that Adam and Bill had put together when Tommy said, "I think it's time for Angie to read Alex." Alex did his best to decline, but Tommy persisted.

"Come on, you've dodged this long enough. Hey, we've all been through it. I'll even buy you a drink afterward."

Alex relented. "Okay. Okay. I'll do it for you, Tommy." Tommy stood up on his chair and gave Alex a big kiss on the head while the others laughed, except Angie who wasted no time staring into space.

Angie continued her trance-like state for a few moments then blurted out a few statements: "Big...big. Things with this one...much despair...I get betrayal...I get lost love."

"Hey, join the crowd," Tommy butted in. "I think all of us were in a romance that ended up turning to stone."

Angie continued: "No, not the usual kind...this is big...big...like changing the course of history big." She looked at Alex, her eyes looking into his mind and causing a shudder to trickle down his spine. "Not to despair; an angel will save you," she said.

A strange feeling came over Alex. Shivers ran up and down his spine, and he fought the powerful emotions bubbling up from deep inside. It was as if Angie had connected with his soul and ripped it out for everyone to see. He hated his vulnerability and wanted to bolt out of the room and run as fast and as far away as possible. He had worked hard at burying his despair, and now Angie apparently had no problem dredging it up and plunking it on the table like a Thanksgiving Day turkey. Angie dropped her head and began to sob.

"Angie, are you okay?" Bill said as he and Adam moved to console her.

"I've seen her do a lot of these readings, but I've never seen her look like that," exclaimed Tommy. The carefree tone of the room turned dead serious.

"I'm okay." Angie pulled herself together. "Strong karma with this one..."

Alex, shaking and dripping with sweat, broke the tension by turning to Tommy, who was now displaying a serious and pale face, and saying, "Did you say something about buying me a drink?" In a few moments they were out the door.
